Buttery and just the right sweetness, it is surprising how well dates and walnuts go together in this recipe that it will be nicknamed “food for the gods”.
This is the Food for the Gods (FFTG) recipe I used when I used to bake and sell these on my home-based bakery. It was a recipe copied from the internet more than a decade ago, I don’t even know where, and with my minor tweaks.

Food for the Gods Recipe
Yield: 8×12 inch rectangular tray
- 140 grams plain/all-purpose flour
- 2.5ml or 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 2.5ml or 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1.25ml or 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 225 grams butter, melted
- 3 large eggs
- 400 grams or 2 cups brown sugar
- 120 grams or 1 cup dates, roughly chopped
- 100 grams or 1 cup walnuts, roughly chopped
- Preheat oven to 180C. Line an 8×12 inch tray with baking paper.
- Mix the melted butter, eggs and sugar.
- Add in the flour, baking powder, soda and salt. Mix until smooth.
- Mix in the dates and walnuts.
- Pour mixture into lined tray and bake in the oven for 25 minutes or until toothpick inserted comes out clean.
