Buttermilk Waffles from scratch

I was worried the waffle maker would be one of my online shopping impulse buys, one of those I would regret, having only used it a few times and never again. But warm and freshly cooked buttermilk waffles from scratch, filling the house with the smell of browning butter- my oh my, I have hearts before my eyes. It was worth it.

They are also straightforward to make, with ingredients you are never without. Here, I whittled down the Buttermilk Waffle recipe from the Gourmet Cookbook so that it yields just enough for my family of 4.

With all the different ingredients, it normally takes a few minutes more to make the batter with this recipe than if you had bought a ready-made waffle mix. But this is the best waffle I have ever had. It’s so worth the extra 2 minutes. If you want the best waffle experience too, make this recipe using GOOD QUALITY BUTTER. Enjoy!

You will never buy boxed waffle mix again. Making buttermilk waffles from scratch is easy and yet tastes so much better.

  • ¼ tsp baking soda
  • ⅓ tsp salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • ½ stick unsalted butter (60g), (melted)
  • 1 large egg
  1. Mix your dry ingredients together- flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt.

  2. Add in a lightly whisked egg, buttermilk and melted butter.

  3. Whisk dry and wet ingredients together until smooth.

  4. Cook in your waffle maker, following waffle maker's instructions.
